Why does the SmartAgro solution use smartphones rather than regular mobile phones ?

Thanks to their on-board equipment (GPS and camera) and the arrival of low cost devices (<US$ 100), smartphones can be a cheap alternative to the IT tools used in industrial agriculture.
The intuitive design of the SmartAgro application and the possibility to read and record multimedia content (photos, videos…) allow illiterate people to use it and reduce translation issues, unlike solutions using only text messaging.

What happens if there is a weak internet or mobile phone network in the targeted area?

No mobile phone network or internet connection is needed for the data collection step on the field. The smartphone application can be used “offline”, only the GPS network is required (available almost everywhere) to locate the field.
It is only for the second step, for the centralization of the data, that the smartphone will have to be synchronized with a computer with an internet connection, in the nearest village (in cooperative’s premises, an internet café, a school…)
