The current situation in emerging countries
FOR FARMERS
No yield improvement
Difficult to access the market and low bargaining power
FOR NGOS & CO-OPERATIVES
Lack of accurate and updated data of the needs of the farmers, which limits their capacity to deliver appropriate support and knowledge.
FOR PRIVATE AND PUBLIC ORGANISATIONS
Difficulty for the buyers to find producers and build long term partnerships.
Research centers, statistical institutes and governments lack data to conduct agronomic or economic studies and surveys.
The facts : the democratisation of ICT
- The use of mobile phones is already more diversified in emerging countries and in rural areas when compared to the rest of the world (for example: mobile Banking, mobile Health etc).
- The launch of low-cost smartphones (< US $100) has produced a unique opportunity. Thanks to inbuilt GPS and camera technology and the possibility to run sophisticated software, a smartphone can be a cheap alternative to the traditional IT tools used in industrial agriculture.

WHAT DATA?
Major data is collected thanks to an easy-to-use application: layout and localisation of the field (GPS coordinates), type of crops, observation pictures (of diseases, of the maturity of the crops…), operations carried out on the field (plowing, irrigation, fertilizers and inputs used…) and also information such as the tools and the work force available.
